INDIANAPOLIS – Phillip E. Bowlen, age 78, of Indianapolis, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Franciscan St. Francis Health. He was born on August 24, 1936 in Monroe County as the son of Lawrence and Ella (Baugh) Bowlen. He graduated from Bloomington High School in 1954 and served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He married Oneita M. (Stephen) on August 25, 1957. Phil worked for International Harvester as a Tool Design Engineer for 18 years before retiring; he also worked at Westinghouse for many years. He loved farming as a boy as well as much of his adult life. He was a member of New Palestine Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where he volunteered his time to the church; he was also a member of Fairland Masonic Lodge, American Legion, Family Campers and RVers, Scoutmaster for Cub Scouts #245, and a volunteer for Lake Aurora Christian Camp in Lake Wales, Florida. He is survived by his wife, Oneita Bowlen; sons, Kevin (Merrie) Bowlen of Springfield, MO, Barry (Lynnette) Bowlen of New Palestine, and Jay (Sheri) Bowlen of Huntsville, AL, siblings, Paul (Sharon) Bowlen of Indianapolis, Jan (Barry) Ryser of Bloomington, Donna Pratt of Bloomington, Ron (Cheryl McKamey) Bowlen of Martinsville, and Connie (Jim) Hill of Bloomington; nine grandchildren, Amanda (Adam) Brooker, Laura (Alex) Martin, Carrie Bowlen, Greg Bowlen, Andrea (Jake) Krebs, Tommy (Courtney) Miessen, Eric (Krissy) Miessen, Jesse Miessen, and Alex Bowlen; and 3 great-grandchildren, Ashton Brooker, Ava Martin, Aleah Brooker and two on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Ella Bowlen; and siblings, Richard, Thomas, Jerry Bowlen, and Bertha Avery. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2015, from 2:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at New Palestine Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 4053 South 650 West, New Palestine, IN 46163. GREENFIELD – Jane Ann Rein, age 68, of Greenfield, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Hancock Regional Hospital. She was born on December 8, 1946 in Indianapolis as the daughter of David Charles and Anne Louise Rein. Ms. Rein received her bachelor’s degree from DePauw University. She worked for the State of Indiana as a social worker for many years and Hartford Insurance for many years. She also worked for the Girls Scouts of America. Ms. Rein was a member of a sorority at Depauw University. She enjoyed weaving, being active, water colors, and loved reading. She also loved life, enjoyed traveling, and loved her cats and BMW. Jane was an avid supporter of animal well-being who donated to animal organizations across the world. Jane is survived by her several cousins, friends, and sister friends, Susan Evans and Phyllis Daniels of Greenfield. She was preceded in death by her parents, David Charles and Anne Louise Rein. A memorial gathering will take place on Saturday, June 20, 2015, from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary & Crematory, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. GREENFIELD – Pastor Tommy Hensley, Sr., age 72, of Greenfield, passed away Monday, June 8, 2015 at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation – Greenfield. He was born on January 27, 1943 in Halifax, NC as the son of Clinton Hensley and Grace (Hensley) McCurry. Tommy married Anna (Davis) Shuford Hensley on January 12, 1996 in Barnardsville, NC. Brother Hensley was a pastor of churches in North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, and Indiana for over 48 years. He collected classic cars and loved the Lord and his vast library of ministry. Tommy is survived by his wife, Anna Hensley of Greenfield; three sons, Tommy W. (Mary) Hensley, Jr. of Indianapolis, Ronald L. Hensley of Indianapolis, and Calvin (Earlisa) Hensley of Greenfield; step-daughter, Maxine (Mackie) Shelton of Barnardsville, NC; step-son, Max Edward (Jean) Shuford, Jr. of Weaverville, NC; mother, Grace (Hensley) McCurry of Burnsville, NC; four brothers, Larry, Clifton, Jeffrey, and Timothy; four sisters, Vivian, Louise, Anna, and Daphney; nine grandchildren, Kellie (Joe), Tommy Ryan (Gayla), Bethany (Aaron), Jacob, Courtney, Kristy (Dennis), Brian (Sue), Heath (Cassey), and Teresa (Kenny); and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Hensley; father, Clinton Hensley; and brother, Joey. Charles F. Davis

GREENFIELD – Charles F. Davis, age 73, of Greenfield, passed away at 9:02 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2015 at home, surrounded by his family. After a courageous battle with cancer, he is now at peace with the Lord. Charles was born on March 23, 1942 in Indianapolis as the son of Virginia Beck. He graduated from Lawrence-Central High School in 1960. Charles attended Purdue University and earned his Associate of Applied Science degree in Architectural Engineering Technology in 1963. He proudly served his country in the US Army. Charles worked for Tousley-Bixler Construction Co. as Vice President of Operations for 18 years and then served The Skillman Corporation as Senior-Vice President of Construction for 22 years before retiring in 2007. Charles was a devoted husband to Norma L. Davis for 52 years, a loving father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He loved spending time with family and friends; trap shooting, hunting, traveling, reading, playing cards, and snowmobiling. He was a life-time member of the NRA and he attended New Palestine United Methodist Church. He is survived by his beloved wife, Norma L. Davis; children, Kim (Teresa) Davis, Jennifer (Ellen) Riley-Davis and Chad (Shannon) Davis; four grandchildren, Christopher Johnson, Jaimie Beck, Kelsie (Trey) Hornberger and Kayla Jacob; one great-grandchild, Braedon Beck; beloved sister-in-law, Marietta Christ; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Beck; stepfather, Russell Beck; uncle, William Mead (better known as “Uncle Joe”); and grandparents, Charles F. and Elsie J. Mead. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 16, 2015, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary in Greenfield. She was born on February 2, 1921 in Republic, PA as the daughter of Domenico and Alodia (Santoni) Contesti. She graduated from Redstone Township High School in Republic, PA. She was married to Edward Sigwalt and Clarence Andreoni. Dora spent her time as a homemaker, she loved watching and taking care of her family; she also enjoyed cooking. Dora is survived by her daughter, Janet (Frank) Hall of New Palestine; brother, Raymond (Marsha) Contesti of Naples, FL; sister, Rose Forsythe of Clinton Township, MI; daughter-in-law, Sue Sigwalt of Franklin; 4 grandchildren, Edward (Patti) Hall of Franklin Township, Bruce Hall of San Diego, John Sigwalt, and Dean Sigwalt, both of Franklin; six great-grandchildren; and 2 great great-grandchildren. FORTVILLE – Ralph James Fancher, age 73, of Fortville, passed away Monday, June 15, 2015 at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation – Greenfield. He was born on November 4, 1941 in Peoria, IL as the son of Cecil J. Fancher and Fern Garnet Irene (Perrill) Fancher Mattox. He served in the U.S. Marines. Ralph married Sue Ann (Rau) Fancher on January 23, 1987 in Indianapolis, IN. He was the owner of R&R Carpet Cleaning in Fortville for 11 years. Ralph loved traveling with his family to Tennessee and visiting the Smokey Mountains, Dixie Stampede, Dollywood, and Memories Theatre. He never met a stranger. He also enjoyed bowling and going out to eat at his favorite restaurants Ponderosa and Golden Coral. Ralph is survived by his wife, Sue Ann Fancher of Fortville; son, Ralph James Fancher, Jr. of Fortville; daughter, Lori Ann Fancher Huff of Decatur, IN; brother, Garry Lee Fancher of Sadorus, IL; sisters, Carol Sue Dixon and Janet K. Butler both of Illinois; and grandson, Jermey Thomas Aumann of Decatur, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil J. Fancher and Fern Garnet Irene (Perrill) Fancher Mattox and sister, Judith Ann Howard. GREENFIELD – Donal Edwards, Sr., age 79, of Greenfield, passed away Sunday, June 14, 2015 at his residence. He was born on April 1, 1936 in Indianapolis as the son of Marshall C. and Lulabelle (Stringer) Edwards. He attended Arsenal Tech High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959-1961 during the Korean War. Donal married Betty Sue (Copeland) in October 1961 in Greenfield. He worked for Allstate Insurance as an adjuster and then for Blossom Chevrolet as a body shop manager. Mr. Edwards was a member of the Indianapolis Scottish Rite. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. Donal is survived by his wife, Betty “Sue” Edwards of Greenfield; three children, Kathy Jones of Greenfield, Donal (Renee) Edwards, Jr. of Fortville, and Joella (David) Hedge of Greenfield; brother, Ronnie Carwien of Greenfield; six grandchildren, Brittany, Megan, Trey, Dillon, Hunter, and Della; three great-grandchildren, Angela, Madison, and Mason; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall C. and Lulabelle (Stringer) Edwards; nine sisters; and two brothers. Mrs. Witter received her bachelor’s in elementary education from Ball State University in 1967. Jenny married John Witter. Jenny enjoyed traveling and being with her grandchildren. She was a member of Altrusa International. Jenny is survived by her husband of 48 years, John Witter of New Palestine; two sons, J. Todd (Beth) Witter of Morgantown, WV and Brent V. (Hillary) Witter of Avon, IN; daughter, Aimee Lynn Witter of New Palestine; 5 grandchildren, Hayden Witter, Amelia Witter, Tristan Witter, Jacob Witter, and Dakota Dugan. GREENFIELD – Carol “Jeanne” (Holmes) Frazier, age 77, of Greenfield, passed away Thursday, June 18, 2015 at Hancock Regional Hospital Hospice Unit surrounded by her family. She was born on September 22, 1937 in Indianapolis as the daughter of Maurice and Ruth (Harrison) Holmes. She graduated from Greenfield High School in 1955. Jeanne married Jerry D. Frazier on January 1, 1956 in Mohawk. She worked for Fort Benjamin Harrison as the secretary to the commanding general for 37 years before retiring in 1993. Jeanne loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing bingo and going to casinos with her friends and family, and going to Vegas with her sisters. Jeanne is survived by her children, Doug Frazier of Greenfield, Dana (Tim) Hughes of Indianapolis, and Jodi Martin of Indianapolis; sisters, Betty Lutsko of Orlando, FL and Joan Payne of Charlottesville, IN; five grandchildren, Jeremy (Christa) Pike, Jessica (Russell) McDonald, Casey (Derrick) Pierce, Katie Hughes, and Nikki Hughes; five great-grandchildren, Zach McDonald, Olivia McDonald, Jase Pike, Taylor Evans, and Kaylee Pierce; and one great-great-grandson, Kyson McDonald; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry D. GREENFIELD – Sandra Kay (Wilt) Leisure went to her eternal home on June 18, 2015. Born in Dayton, Ohio, on February 3, 1943, she lived in Greenfield for the past 10 years and previously lived in Shelbyville, Indiana. Sandra was employed at Overhead Door and NasCorp before retiring in 2002. She loved to laugh and care for her family. Her affection for animals was boundless, helping whenever there was a need. Sandra is survived by her sister, MaryLou (Tod) Eikenbery, son James (Rena) Leisure, daughters Sherri (Scott) Cozart and Terri (Ted) Dunn, grandchildren Patrick, Molly, and Jena. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernie and Geneva Wilt, and infant son, Patrick Leisure. There will be a private memorial at a later date. Marla Kathryn Hershberger

GREENFIELD – Marla Kathryn (Kylander) Hershberger, age 73, of Greenfield, passed away Thursday, June 11, 2015 at Hancock Regional Hospital Hospice. Marla devoted her life to God and family. She was a former member of St. James Lutheran Church in Greenfield and a current member of Cross of Grace Lutheran Church in New Palestine. She was a long time Sunday school and Vacation Bible School teacher and Vacation Bible School director. She served on church council, was a founding leader of Christ Care small group ministry, and served as a Stephen’s minister. She led Bible studies for adults with developmental disabilities from 1992 until her death. The organization evolved its name from Lutheran Disabilities Ministry, to Friendship Bible Studies, and finally SonRise Bible studies. Marla was a consummate youth leader. She led two Girl Scout troops at different times, led a Hancock County 4-H Horse and Pony Club, participated in New Palestine PTO, Band Boosters, and Athletic Boosters. She was a Den Mother and member of the Troop 244 parent’s auxiliary. She served as a pairing official for the Indiana State Wrestling Association and at national tournaments for the USA Wrestling Association. She was a member of Kids and Kettles Homemakers Club for 39 years. Marla was born on December 22, 1941 in St. Charles Hospital in Aurora, Illinois. She grew up in rural Wheaton, Illinois. She participated in 4-H for 10 years. Marla graduated from Wheaton High school in 1959, worked for one year as a long distance telephone operator, then attended Eureka College for two years. She was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority and a cheerleader in college. She regularly was on the Dean’s List for academic achievement. She met Charles Hershberger at college and married him on June 30, 1962. She received a PHT certificate (Put Hubby Through) when her husband graduated. Their marriage of almost 53 years produced three children and five grandchildren. Marla provided early childhood daycare for 17 years. She worked as a historical interpreter at Conner Prairie Pioneer Interactive History Park from 1980 until struck by cancer in 2004. She was a member of the Midwest Open Air Museums Coordinating Council. Marla was renowned for her cooking. She spent most of her career at Conner Prairie in the museum’s cooking posts. She chaired the kitchen committee at St. James Lutheran Church and organized church wide and group dinners for many occasions over the years. She especially excelled at pies and breads winning blue ribbons in area contests. She further exhibited creative skills as a seamstress by hand sewing her pioneer costumes for Conner Prairie and exhibiting dresses at the state fair. Marla is survived by her husband, Charles “Chuck” Hershberger of Greenfield; son, C. Douglas (Yifat) Hershberger of Fremont, CA; daughters, Mardi (Troy) Stewart of Holyoke, CO and Jaime Hershberger of Greenfield; brothers, Charles (Martha) Kylander of Baton Rouge, LA and Ralph (Sue) Kylander of McHenry, IL; five grandchildren, Ella (Brock) Stewart-Tendick, Charles “Luke” Stewart, Charlie Hershberger, Andrew “Drew” Stewart, and Joy Hershberger; sister-in-law, Kate Hershberger-Teter; two nieces; and five nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles O. and Eleanor W. Kylander; and sister-in-law, Christine Hershberger-Miner. A memorial calling will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Cross of Grace Lutheran Church, 3519 S. 600 W., New Palestine, IN 46163. There will be no casket present at the memorial according to Marla’s wishes. A memorial service will take place following the calling at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Mark Havel and Pastor Aaron Stamper will be officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at New Palestine Cemetery in New Palestine. Lunch will be served at the church after the burial. James “Jim” Lee Howell

GREENFIELD – James “Jim” Lee Howell, age 73, of Greenfield, passed away Sunday, June 21, 2015 at his residence. He was born on July 24, 1941 in New Castle, IN as the son of Floyd Lee and Helen Elizabeth (Hanna) Howell. He graduated from Greenfield High School in 1959. Mr. Howell received his bachelor’s from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1959-1987. Jim married Mary Naomi (Harrell) on December 18, 1962 in Millington, TN. After retiring from the military he worked for Lockheed Martin for over 20 years before retiring as a Regional Manager in 2003. Mr. Howell was a member of Greenfield American Legion Post 119. He enjoyed flying as a private pilot, drawing, photography, and developing his own photos. GREENFIELD – Amy J. (Shambaugh) Wright, age 48, of Greenfield, passed away Monday, June 22, 2015 at Hancock Regional Hospital. She was born on January 28, 1967 in Beech Grove as the daughter of Steve and Sharon (Bodkin) Shambaugh. She graduated from Greenfield Central High School in 1985. Amy earned an associate’s degree from Lockyear College in 1988. Amy married Don L. Wright on June 25, 2010 in Greenfield. She worked for Hancock County as a deputy recorder, State Attorney General’s Office in Indianapolis for many years, and Methodist Hospital as an office manager for Dr. Eugene Lammers. Amy was a member of Brandywine Community Church and was a former Sunday School Teacher. She loved her family dearly. Amy is survived by her husband, Don Wright of Greenfield; parents, Steve and Sharon (Bodkin) Shambaugh of Greenfield; children, Morgan Fowler and Skylier Fowler both of Beech Grove; god son, Jed Spiker of Greenfield; siblings, Troy (Cori) Shambaugh and Susan Shambaugh both of Greenfield; several aunts and uncles; and special niece, nephew, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Max and Esther Bodkin and Paul and Eunice Shambaugh. (Marsh) Neuerman. He graduated from Tech High School in 1956. Sam married Lois LeAnne (Cope) on February 23, 1993. He worked for Brookside Corporation as a Quality Control Engineer and consulted at other business after that. Mr. Neuerman was a member of Mt. Comfort United Methodist Church – Church of the Risen Christ and Quality Assurance Organization. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed watching auto racing, and spending time with his grandchildren Sam is survived by his wife, Lois Neuerman of Greenfield; sons, Steve (Patty) Neuerman and Gary (Anne Marie) Neuerman both of Indianapolis; sister, Mona (Bob) Caho of Florida; grandson, Carey Neuerman; granddaughter, Katie Neuerman; step-children, Steve (Jean) Ellenberger of Greenfield, Scott (Joyce) Ellenberger of Greenfield, and Debbie (Tony) Hice of Colorado; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. MORRISTOWN – Sue Ann (Myer) Wortman, age 81, of Morristown, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2015. She was born on March 23, 1934 in Rush County as the daughter of Fred L. and Frances E. (Kuhn) Myer. She graduated from Morristown High School in 1952 and received her degree from Elkhart University. Sue married James Robert “Bob” Wortman on September 22, 1957 in Morristown. After college, she began her career as a lab technician, but marriage and family changed her future plans. She became a co-owner and full partner in the many Wortman family businesses and endeavors. Sue was a member of Morristown United Methodist Church and founding charter member of MNO (Mother’s Night Out) Extension Homemaker’s Club. Sue is survived by her husband, Bob Wortman of Morristown; daughter, Lisa (Stephen) Bridges of Morristown; and many loving, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred L. and Frances E. (Kuhn) Myer; son, Jay Lee Wortman; infant son, Jeffery Lyall Wortman; and sister, Mrs. Robert “Jean” Clark. GREENFIELD – D. Christopher Osborne, age 68, of Greenfield, Indiana, passed away June 25, 2015, at Hancock Regional Hospital. He was born November 27, 1946, to Donald and Lola (Sanderson) Osborne in Springfield, Ohio, where his father was a professor at Wittenberg University. He spent much of his childhood in Libertyville, Illinois, graduating from Libertyville High School in 1964. Chris received degrees from Purdue University (1968) and Ohio State University (1971), and went on to work in the then-emerging field of computer technology. In 1985, he received his J.D. from Indiana University, eventually opening his own legal and consulting practice in Noblesville, Indiana. He served for a combined 30 years in the Ohio and Indiana National Guard. During his service, he graduated from the Command and General Staff College and the Army War College, and retired at the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1998. Chris was a member and past president of Greenfield Kiwanis and an active member of Bradley United Methodist Church. He was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family dearly, a friend to many in the community, and a staunch supporter of the Purdue Boilermakers. Chris is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Dianne Osborne; sons, Gregory (Charissa) Osborne of Indianapolis, David (Angie) Osborne of Lake Wylie, SC, and Thomas (Jessica) Osborne of Honolulu, HI; daughter, Elizabeth (Richard) Kurkowski of Libertyville, IL; and grandchildren, Nathaniel and Elijah Osborne, Davyn and Adley Osborne, Courtney and Vanessa Kurkowski. The family wishes to extend its sincere appreciation for the outstanding care provided by Brandywine Golden Living and Hancock Regional Hospital. He was born on April 4, 1949 in Washington County Pennsylvania as the son of Harry and Catherine (Griest) Huweart. He graduated from Ivy Tech College with an Associate’s Degree in Automotive and Electronics. Al served with U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War; he received a Purple Heart and National Defense Service Medal. He married Sandra Sue (Lindamood) on February 11, 1989. Al worked for Firestone in Noblesville for over 20 years before retiring. He was a member of DAV and Woodworkers Club of America; he loved woodworking, fishing and taking care of his Dachshunds. He graduated from New Palestine High School and attended Purdue University. Harold married Imogene (Boring) on November 18, 1943 in Carrollton. He was a lifetime farmer. Mr. Brune attended Carrollton United Methodist Church and was a member of New Palestine Masonic Lodge #404 and Fraternal Order Eagles. Harold served many years as Treasurer of the Fountaintown Volunteer Fire Department and Vice President of New Palestine Bank. He enjoyed competitive horseshoes, bowling, and euchre. Harold is survived by his wife, Imogene Brune; daughter, Sheila Reed; son, Gene Brune; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Brune; parents, Clifford and Hazel (Faut) Brune; and sister, Dorothy Kuhns.
