SHELBYVILLE – Mary Ruth Cox, 89, passed away on Wednesday, June 30, 2015 to be with our Lord and Savior. She was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Clarence and Martha (Perry) Reed on September 24, 1925. On March 1, 1942 she married John Marquis Cox. They were married for 59 years before his death in 2001. Mary was a devoted wife and mother, she was a homemaker. Her hobbies were: embroidery work, gardening, puzzles, and trying new recipes. She especially enjoyed hosting large gatherings for her family on the holidays. Mary is survived by her daughter, Margie Westwater and her husband Bob of Shelbyville, and her son, John David Cox of Fortville. Also to cherish her memory are 11 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Mary has one surviving brother, Carl Reed of Cloverdale. She was preceded in death by her son, Jack Louis Cox; her parents; 5 brothers and 3 sisters. GREENFIELD – Mary Ann (Kasarda) Dickerson, 72, departed this life and entered into eternal life with her Savior, Jesus Christ, on June 29, 2015. Mary Ann was born in Rankin, PA, on July 29, 1942 to Paul and Anna (Goda) Kasarda. She had three older brothers, Mike, Paul and John. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Pittsburgh. After several years of work as a dental assistant, she entered the University of Pittsburgh where she met and later married Alexander Dickerson on April 6, 1964. They were married for over 51 years. Al and Mary Ann moved to Greenfield, IN, in 1971 and raised four children: Matthew Sr. (Kathi), Teresa Nosek (Chris), Luke (Gail), and Sarah Dickerson-Love (Dennis Moran). She has 12 grandchildren: Michael, Rachael, Matthew Jr., Stephen, Jordan, Ian, Jenna, Hannah, Danielle, Thad, Mary and Brady. She was expecting another grandchild in November 2015. She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Fortville, IN, sang in the choir and participated in the parish festivals. Mary Ann worked for A&M Chemical as an office manager for 30 years and retired in 2012 to volunteer as a tutor at the Greenfield Learning Center. She was a great cook and baker and loved cooking for family and friends. Mary Ann is survived by her husband, Al, children, grandchildren, brother-in-law Peter Dickerson, sisters-in-law Jill Dickerson, Elizabeth Kasarda and Edie Kasarda and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by infant daughter Maria, her parents, Al’s parents, her three brothers and sister-in-law Peggy Kamin. FOUNTAINTOWN – Gabriel John Wiggins, age 64, of Fountaintown, passed away Monday, June 22, 2015. He was born on November 4, 1950 in Southington, CT as the son of Daniel and Marjorie (Louis) Wiggins. Gabe graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1968. He served in the Indiana Army National Guard for over 20 years. Gabe married Linda (Glass) on June 20, 1981 in Indianapolis. Gabe was self-employed as “A Home Inspector, Inc.” for many years. Gabe attended Brookville Road Community Church. He was a commander of American Legion Post 119, a member of VFW Post 2693, and The Forty & Eight Club. Gabe volunteered as a transport driver for the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed fishing, the beach, and helping others. Gabe is survived by his wife, Linda Wiggins; sons, Robert (Ana) Wiggins and Russell Wiggins; daughter, Cori Dobbs; brother, Dan Wiggins; and grandchild, Harlan Dobbs. He was born on February 27, 1933 in Greenfield as the son of Verlin and Dorothy (Whitaker) McClammer. Earl served in the U.S. Navy. He was a supervisor at General Motors in Anderson for 32 years. Earl enjoyed playing video games, fishing, golfing, his firearms and eagerly competing when he watched Wheel of Fortune. Earl is survived by his two daughters, Carmen Merlet of West Palm Beach, FL and Cyndi Nehls of Henderson, TN; sisters, Leta, Janet, and Clare Jo; four grandchildren, Jason Wilson, Corissa McClammer, Penelope Merlet, and Cassandra McClammer; and one great-grandchild, Trinity Wilson. For his Eagle Scout Project, he designated the First Church of the Nazarene as a Red Cross Disaster Shelter and it was used shortly after his completion. He enjoyed listening to music, fishing, eating, and playing video games. GREENFEILD – Sui Zhen (Huang) Wu, age 85, of Greenfield, passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at Hancock Regional Hospice. She was born on March 14, 1930 in Foshan, China as the daughter of Zhou and Hui Qing (Zhong) Huang. She received her Bachelor’s degree from a university in China. Sui married Xiong Jun Wu. She worked for many years as a High School Math Teacher in China before moving to the United States in 1985. In the past, Sui enjoyed ballroom dancing. She loved collecting family pictures and traveling. She also practiced tai chi for 30 years. Sui is survived by her children, Huan-Ping “Ping” (Kiwah) Wu of Granger, Huan Zhang “John” (SuXing) Wu of Greenfield, and Kay (Rui) Wu of Greenfield; and six grandchildren. FORTVILLE – Jean E. Kemerly, age 91, of Fortville, passed away on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at her home in Fortville. She was born on March 24, 1924 in Waldron, IN the daughter of Carl and Beatrice (Yeager) Peek. She was selected to participate in Hoosier Girl’s State in its founding year. After graduating from Pendleton High School in 1942 and attending Indiana Business College she worked in several local businesses. She and M. Glenn Kemerly were married on May 2, 1953. They were members of the Fortville United Methodist Church. Survivors include her three children, Robert S. Kemerly (friend Diane Stanton) of Warrenton, VA, Karen A. Kemerly and Sharon K. Kemerly both of Fortville. Additional survivors include her sister, Francis (Peek) Mitchell of Oxford, NC; brother, Presley Peek of St. Francis, ME; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years and her parents. GREENFIELD – Ladore “Laddie” Blair, age 88, formerly of New Castle, passed away on August 5, 2015 at CrownPointe Assisted Living Center in Greenfield. He was born on November 16, 1926 in Indianapolis as the son of Harry and Nellie Fae (Johnson) Blair. He graduated from Shortridge High School in 1944. He served in the Navy during World War II in 1944-1946. Laddie married JoeAnn (Darling) on January 2, 1948 in Indiana. He worked as a clerk for the United States Postal Service for many years in New Castle. He also worked for the Henry County Highway Department for many years before retiring in 1991. Mr. Blair was a member of the Cadiz Lions Club. He enjoyed reading, spending time outdoors, and cherishing memories with his grandchildren. Laddie is survived by his wife, JoeAnn Blair of Greenfield; sons, Duane Blair of Cowan, IN and Kelley (Stephanie) Blair of McCordsville; sister, Wanda (Ted) Eaton of Arizona; five grandchildren, Jeramie Oldham, Logan & Shelby Blair, Michelle Crabtree, and Ryan Skinner; and eight step-great-grandchildren. Merlau, Jr. He graduated from New Palestine High School in 1978 David was a farmer in the Hancock County area, as well as a mechanic and welder. He attended New Palestine United Methodist Church, was a previous member of the Cumberland Masonic Lodge, and was a member of Murat Shrine. He was a coin and rock collector and loved spending time outdoors. He also enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson and John Deere Tractor. She was born on January 26, 1952 in Greenfield as the daughter of Arthur Ray Medlin and Mary Lou (Christ) Medlin Maynard. Sharon spent her life as a dedicated homemaker. She was a member of VFW Post #2693 in Greenfield. She loved cooking and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed vacationing and going to family gatherings. She is survived by her mother, Mary Lou Medlin Maynard; children, Anita Medlin of Greenfield, Megan (William) Landis of Greenfield, Lindsay (Nicholas) Bever of New Palestine; brothers, Billy Medlin of Greenfield, Jimmy (Cindy) Medlin of Florida; sisters, Sandra (Paul) Baker of Greenfield, Caroline (Mick) Hewson of Greenfield; five grandchildren, Sasha Guzman, Anthony Guzman, Tre Landis, Connor Landis, Cash Bever; and two great-grandchildren, Brishti Guzman and Elijah Espinoza. She was preceded in death by her father, Arthur Medlin; sister, Karen Thompson; and companion, Billy F. Kissick. A celebration of Sharon’s life will be held at a later date. Lois L. Schaekel
FOUNTAINTOWN – Lois L (Curry) Schaekel, age 87, of Fountaintown, passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2015 at Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation in Greenfield. She was born on October 13, 1927 in New Palestine as the daughter of Paul T. and Anna (Weber) Curry. She graduated from New Palestine High School in 1945. Lois married Harold E. Schaekel in 1992. She worked for Hancock County Circuit Court as a recorder for 19 years. Lois was a member of the Morristown Eastern Star for 50 years and the New Palestine United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the home economics club, and the sewing club. She loved quilting. Lois is survived by her husband, Harold Schaekel of Fountaintown; two sons, Mick (Beverly) Cecil of Greenfield and Gary (Elaine) Cecil of Bonita Springs, FL; stepchildren, Chris Tilley of Morristown, Russel Reed of Milwaukee; brother, Paul T. (Mary Jane) Curry of Scottsdale, AZ; three sisters, Elizabeth Brannam of Beech Grove, IN, Frances Wilkinson of Indianapolis, and Jeanette Woodward of Seymour, IN; grandchildren, Mike, Tom, Gary, Scott, and Stephanie; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank A. Cecil; parents, Paul T. and Anna (Weber) Curry; sister, Ruth Justus; grandson, Bill; and best friend, Juanita Gundrum. A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 21, 2015, at 3:00 p.m. at Fountaintown Cemetery. Pastor Roger Holder will be officiating. Jack Phillips
GREENFIELD – Jack R. Phillips, age 86, of Greenfield, passed away Friday, August 21, 2015 at Select Specialty Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born on August 4, 1929 in St. Louis, MO as the son of Jesse and Ellen (Francis) Phillips. Jack graduated from Zalma High School in Missouri and attended South East Missouri Teachers College. He taught school in rural Missouri before enlisting in the Navy during the Korean War. He worked for Delco Remy, a division of General Motors, for 31 years in advanced engineering and received a patent for his work on ignition systems. Jack married his high school sweetheart, Melva (Richards) Phillips on January 8, 1949. Jack liked fixing things and figuring out how they worked. True to his farm-boy roots, he also enjoyed gardening and growing plants. He especially enjoyed spending time with his beloved grandchildren. He was a member of Park Chapel Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, Melva; children, Steve (Peggy) Phillips of Greenfield and Amy (Steve) Shaw of Batesville; and 6 grandchildren, Jacqueline Youngstafel, Carolyn Boulton, and Luke, Emily, Heidi, and Chloe Shaw. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Ellen Phillips; sisters, Emogene Gould and Nadine McDaniel; and son, Jack (Jackie) Phillips. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2015, from 5:00 until 7:00p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary and Crematory in Greenfield. A Celebration of Life with be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. also at the mortuary. Reverend David Woods will be officiating. GREENFIELD – Betty Jane (Fortune) Ott, age 93, of Greenfield, passed away on Monday, August 24, 2015 at Golden LivingCenters – Brandywine. She was born on November 23, 1921 in Kansas City, Missouri as the daughter of Harry E. and Florence (Rauss) Fortune. She graduated from Central High School in Kansas City, MO. Betty married John L. Ott and they were married for over 63 years. She was a homemaker and volunteered at the gift shop at Hancock Regional Hospital for many years. Betty was a member of the Hancock County Historical Society, Friends of Greenfield Library, Tri Kappa Sorority, and Cosmopolitan Book Club. Betty is survived by her son, Chuck (Carol) Ott of Parker, CO; daughter, Kim (Charlie) Johnson of Nineveh, IN; sister, Marjorie Jean Reid of Eagle, ID; two grandchildren, Katherine “Katie” Ott and Nathan Ott; three great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren, Kristin, Kimberly, Nicole, and Michael. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry E. and Florence Fortune; and husband, John Ott. There will be no services at this time. Patrick Lee Gilliland
WESTFIELD – Patrick Lee Gilliland, age 73, of Westfield, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2015 at St. Vincent Carmel Hospital. He was born on February 12, 1942 in Indianapolis as the son of Chas J. and Frances (Michael) Gilliland. Mr. Gilliland served in the U.S. Navy. Patrick married Bonnie S. (Martin) on May 10, 1962 in Willow Branch. He worked for Chrysler at the transmission plant in Kokomo for many years before retiring. Patrick was a member and past commander at the Fortville VFW and a former master mason. He was a very sought after mechanic and had his own shop behind his house. He enjoyed gardening and loved to cook. He loved his family and took very good care of his wife. Patrick is survived by his son, Patrick “John” Gilliland of Fishers, IN; daughter, Sherry S. (Brian) Borshoff of Carmel, IN; three brothers, Jack Gilliland, Bill Gilliland, and Rusty Gilliland; sister, Peggy Gilliland; and five grandchildren, Patrick Thomas Gilliland, Mark Anthony Gilliland, Owen Michael Gilliland, Britney Nicole (Derrick) Webb, and Tiffany Borshoff. He was preceded in death by his parents, Chas J. and Frances (Michael) Gilliland; wife, Bonnie Gilliland; and brother, Nick Gilliland.
